It is believed that Yellowstone was settled for thousands of years before the French settlers arrived, however, a lot of the Native American history is quite unclear in this area. We do know however that there we several expeditions of the area, and one famous one which was led by F.V Hayden, who petitioned the government to take the park off of public auction to turn it into a national park. Then on March 1, 1872 President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill into effect making Yellowstone officially a National Park.
